What are the Food Safety Legal Requirements?
EU Regulation 852/2004
Based on the EU Regulation 852/2004, all Food business that prepare, sell handle and store food must receive appropriate supervision, and be instructed and/or trained in food hygiene, to enable them to handle food safely. Those responsible for developing and maintaining the business's food safety procedures, based on HACCP principles, must have received adequate training. The requirements for training should be seen in the context of the nature and size of the business. There is no legal requirement to attend a formal training course or get a qualification, although many businesses may want their staff to do so. The necessary skills may also be obtained in other ways, such as through on-the-job training, self-study or relevant prior experience. The operator of the food business is responsible for ensuring this happens.

What is Level 2 Food Safety in Catering?
The Level 2 Food Safety in Catering course is designed as an introduction to the essentials of food hygiene. It is aimed at individuals who handle food and drink as part of their everyday or occasional working routines and provides a good introduction to the fundamentals of food hygiene and the causes and prevention of food poisoning.
Why do I need it?
The EU mandates due diligence of food safety training for those working in the industry. If you work in the industry and handle food or drink on a daily basis, this is the course for you. It is vital for you to understand your responsibility to provide clean and healthy working practices. If you employ staff who handle food and drink as part of their day-to-day activities, it is your responsibility to ensure they are fully trained and understand the importance of maintaining a clean and safe food and drink environment.
How much does it cost?
The Level 2 Food Safety in Catering is £15.
What does the online exam consist of?
The online exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions that follow the modules from the course. You must answer 20 out of 30 correct to pass the examination, and are given 40 minutes.
How long is the course?
The e-learning course is designed to take around 5 hours to complete. This will depend on your prior experience and on how much time you allocate to complete the course (e.g. you may wish to complete the whole course in one sitting, or complete modules of the course over a period of time). When and how you learn is flexible and you can choose what suits you the best.
